The government of Vietnam is aiming to sell stakes in both Mobifone and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VPTG) by 2021.

According to Bloomberg, the Vietnamese state could sell “up to” 49% of its shares in both companies. VPTG owns Vinaphone, which is the country’s third largest mobile operator. Mobifone meanwhile is the second biggest behind Viettel, which is owned by the Vietnamese military.

Vietnam has a large number of state-owned companies and the government has attempted several share sales in the past, but has had difficulty attracting investors. During 2017, a total of 127 companies were lined up for investment rounds but only 35 completed them.

With its new share sale, the government is looking to sell off stakes in 93 firms across various market sectors.
