Analyst company GlobalData hailed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for its recommendations for adopting AI, stating this will fuel “ground-breaking advancements” in the Indian telecoms industry.

TRAI announced a series of recommendations to leverage AI and big data in the telecoms sector this month. The regulator recommended building a regulatory framework for responsible AI, collaborating with service providers to develop new technology, and establishing an AI-specialised centre of excellence.

GlobalData detailed in a statement that the Indian telecoms market is set to grow at a rate of 2.4% CAGR to US$41.1 billion in 2026.

A key advantage of AI is creating self-optimising networks to adapt to fluctuating network traffic, Advanced AI technology can enable operators to swiftly detect and resolve anomalies, cut down disruption and improve quality of service.

GlobalData principal analyst Shri Charan Padala said: “As data volumes surge, network capacity struggles to keep pace with the escalating demand. However, with strategic implementation of AI in crucial areas like network management, the sector can elevate its quality of service (QoS), optimize spectrum management, enhance network security, and bolster overall reliability.”

Padala added there is a surge in SIM swapping fraud in India leading to customers losing money from unauthorised transactions. An example Padala pointed to was how AI worked hand in hand with eSIM technology. In this partnership, AI can monitor and identify in real-time suspicious transactions and then execute countermeasures to thwart fraudsters.

Padala concluded: “As AI takes centre stage in India's telecom industry, it heralds a new era of unprecedented growth and fortification against emerging challenges. By embracing the power of AI, the Indian telecom industry can elevate customer experiences, safeguard revenues, and fortify the security of sensitive subscriber data, thereby creating a win-win scenario for operators and consumers alike.”
