MTN starts rolling out MTN One TV streaming service across Africa

MTN Group announced on Monday it has begun rolling out MTN One TV, a new video streaming service that bundles live TV, local content and international entertainment into flexible packages with various viewing and payment options.

MTN One TV promises to give customers more choice in how they watch content, with viewing models that vary by market and can include free-to-view content, advertising-funded experiences, pay-as-you-watch access and subscription offerings.

With payments being one of the biggest barriers to streaming adoption, MTN said customers can pay for MTN One TV using airtime, Mobile Money, and other locally supported payment methods, depending on local availability.

MTN is also positioning the platform as an opportunity for African creators, broadcasters, advertisers, and ecosystem partners to connect content to wider audiences through MTN’s scale across connectivity, payments, and digital services.

MTN aims to support greater content discovery, broader audience reach, and sustainable growth across Africa’s digital entertainment ecosystem by bringing together a broad mix of content experiences under a single proposition, said Selorm Adadevoh, MTN Group’s chief commercial, strategy and transformation officer.

“Through MTN One TV, we are leveraging the scale of our connectivity, fintech, and digital capabilities to make relevant content more accessible while creating new opportunities for Africa’s creative and digital economies,” he said in a statement.

MTN plans to roll out the service in phases across its markets in Africa and create a more consistent and scalable entertainment proposition across its footprint.

The launch of MTN One TV comes a little over a year after MTN Group announced a partnership with UK-based video software provider Synamedia to develop a new streaming platform for mobile and fixed broadband subscribers across Africa.

MTN rival Airtel Africa has been offering its own video streaming platform, Airtel TV, since 2020. Statista forecasts streaming market revenues across Africa to grow to US$$7.1 million by 2029.
