A reminder of one of the problems that undersea connectivity can bring comes from Bangladesh where undersea cable maintenance is under way, bringing some disruption to internet connectivity.

In fact, according to Bangladesh newspaper the Daily Star, the country is likely to suffer slow internet for the next six days due to submarine cable maintenance.

The newspaper says the affected link is a fibre optic cable that connects Bangladesh’s international internet gateway operators with Singapore.

OptiMax Communication Ltd, an ISP and international internet gateway company, has been quoted as saying that an upcoming emergency i2i circuit maintenance was under way and that it would last until 12.30 am on October 31. i2i is a submarine telecommunications cable connecting Chennai in India and Tuas in Singapore.

During the maintenance period, a number of SEA-ME-WE 4 circuits are expected to be down, meaning high latency, intermittent packet loss, and jitter in multiple destinations. However, this maintenance does not directly affect SEA-ME-WE 4 but only those IIGs that are using SEA-ME-WE 4 from Cox’s Bazar to Chennai and that are then connected to the i2i to reach Singapore.

That said, one aim of the maintenance work is to avoiding any unplanned outage in the near future. In any case, the internet will still be accessible. OptiMax has said it aims to shift traffic to other available paths to avoid disruption.

The South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) 4 is an approximately 18,800 km submarine cable connecting Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France.
