Ecuadorian telecoms provider Telconet is deploying Ruckus Wireless’ Smart Wi-Fi products across the Latin American country, with over 4,000 ZoneFlex indoor and outdoor access points so far rolled out. Telconet is using Ruckus technology to provide wireless internet access to many municipalities in Ecuador, supporting thousands of users. The rollout comes after Telconet field-tested the technology along with other solutions, eventually settling on Ruckus after concluding it provided the most reliable coverage and could handle high user density per access point. Data from Ecuador’s Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society (Mintel) shows last year over 5 million mobile clients were in use in the country, accessing the internet via Wi-Fi for a variety of activities. The technology employed by Telconet includes the ZoneFlex access points, SmartCell Gateways and ZoneDirector controllers, while the telco is also utilising the Ruckus SmartCell Insight (SCI) data analytics platform. The latter is a reporting and analytics engine purpose-built for carrier grade Wi-Fi infrastructure to allow operators to effectively analyse the operation of networks. “We chose Ruckus because we found their technology to be very reliable and the best performing solution for our nationwide network,” said Arturo Velasco, chief technology officer of Telconet. “Currently, the Telconet network provides Wi-Fi coverage to over 100,000 users. It took just 15 days to deploy the first set of controllers and access points. Ruckus technology has enabled us to deploy rapidly, while providing the high-performance and network capacity to support large numbers of concurrent users across the country - a tremendous advantage for us versus our competitors.” Velasco said the technology had performed well even though the environment in which the tests were run was the “worst possible”. “We installed equipment in a test city in Ecuador on an avenue with a large number of physical obstructions, including many trees and diverse vegetation, and the Ruckus ZoneFlex access points outperformed competitors in all of our tests,” he said. “With Ruckus, we have a very reliable solution as the backbone of our new nationwide network. Additionally, the ease of installation was invaluable, saving us time and money.
