Cambodian telco CamGSM (a.k.a. CellCard) announced on Monday it has signed an MoU with Huawei to invest approximately US$300 million over the next few years to modernise its networks and data centre infrastructure.
Under the MoU, CellCard and subsidiaries of its owner, Royal Group of Companies (RCG) will collaborate with Huawei to expand and upgrade its 5G network in key provinces using Huawei's 5G and 4G technology, including MetaAAU solutions that enhance network capacity coverage and user experience whilst also reducing energy consumption.
CellCard will also collaborate with Huawei on cloud AI infrastructure and model-as-a-service (MaaS) capabilities, creating the foundation for future AI applications that can support businesses, government institutions, educational institutions and digital entrepreneurs.
The MoU also calls for CellCard and other RGC subsidiaries to modernize their data centre infrastructure using Huawei's Fusion Module 2000 modular data centre solution, which CellCard said will increase reliability, expand security and operational efficiency, and support the future growth of cloud services, digital platforms and AI workloads.
Huawei will also help CellCard modernise its fibre network, including its core DWDM network and its FTTH home broadband infrastructure in Phnom Penh.
For the latter, CellCard will deploy Huawei’s XGS-PON technology capable of providing internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps to customers. CellCard plans to combine its new XGS-PON capabilities with Huawei's WiFi Sense solution to give home broadband customers better connectivity and service experiences.
Meanwhile, CellCard will deploy Huawei’s AI-powered SmartCare technology to create a customer experience management platform that it says can proactively improve service quality, enhance customer satisfaction and provide a more tailored digital experience.
The MoU also includes Huawei's PowerStar energy-saving platform, which CellCard said will help improve network energy efficiency, reduce electricity consumption and support the company's environmental sustainability goals.
CellCard CEO Manu Rajan said the multi-year project will not only modernise its network, but also establish a digital platform on which to build future services.
“Our additional investment of US$300 million will modernize the entire technology system, the fibre optic internet network in people's homes, the data centre, the AI cloud infrastructure and the systems we use to manage the customer experience,” he said in a statement.
“By combining innovation across 5G technology, optical networks, cloud data centres, artificial intelligence, customer experience and network technologies, we look forward to supporting CellCard along with RGC's other subsidiaries in building a comprehensive and future-ready digital infrastructure,” added Wang Xu, president of Huawei Southeast Asia.
RGC chairman and CEO Kith Meng said that CellCard has invested approximately US$5.6 billion in Cambodia's digital telecoms and information technology ecosystem since it first launched operations in 1996.
