Malawi’s CTN expands 4G FWA to more underserved areas in Lilongwe

Malawi fixed wireless access (FWA) service provider Converged Technology Networks (CTN) has reportedly partnered with unconnected.org and the Internet Society to expand its network cover more underserved areas in Lilongwe.

According to TechAfrica News, CTN has upgraded its 4G FWA network with five new base stations activated in Area 9, Area 25, Area 36, Airwing and Chitipi. This will enable over 20 secondary schools to gain access to 4G internet connectivity.

Under the digital inclusion initiative with unconnected.org and the Internet Society, CTN will provide the connectivity to the schools free of charge, which will give students and teachers greater access to online learning platforms, digital research resources and other educational services, the report said.

With the latest expansion, CTN’s 4G FWA services now cover Areas 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 22, 23, 24, 25, 33, 36, 47, 50 and 51, as well as Falls Estates, Chitipi, Chitedze, Bibi, Njewa, Katete, Bypass, NRC and Airwing.

CTN CEO Brian Munyao Longwe said the operator’s tie-up with unconnected.org and the Internet Society highlights the growing role of collaboration between telecoms operators, tech organisations and digital inclusion initiatives in extending broadband access and connecting more communities to the digital economy, the report said.

Longwe also said the initiative represents a positive step towards strengthening digital inclusion in Malawi, with further expansion in the pipeline to reach more underserved areas.
