Parallel Wireless and Telecall Colombia have announced plans to speed up national-scale deployment of Telecall's 5G network using AI-based Open RAN technology.
Parallel Wireless said the rollout – which will utilise its Unity AI Open RAN solution – will address diverse connectivity needs across thousands of sites, from extending high-speed broadband to underserved areas where fibre is limited or unavailable to network densification in higher-demand locations.
This flexible deployment approach will enable Telecall to apply the appropriate technologies for different coverage and capacity requirements, the vendor said.
Parallel said its Unity AI solution embeds AI capabilities within the RAN, enabling the network to adapt to real-world traffic and RF conditions, while its GreenRAN platform combines AI-enabled Open RAN with energy-efficient network technologies, which will help Telecall scale more cost-effectively while improving spectrum and infrastructure utilization.
The deployment is part of Telecall’s broader ambition to build a modern, AI-enabled telecoms environment from the ground up using its national 3.5-GHz spectrum license, without the constraints of legacy network architecture, said Telecall CEO and co-founder Allan Kelman Ajuz.
“We have an opportunity to build a new kind of mobile network in Colombia, one designed from the start around innovation, intelligence and the customer experience,” he said in a statement released Wednesday. “Our ambition is to connect more people, bring high-quality broadband to communities that have historically been difficult to reach, and create a network that can evolve with the needs of our customers and the country.”
Telecall was one of four operators to secure spectrum in Colombia’s 5G auction in 2023, marking its entry into the country’s mobile market. However, its mobile ambitions got off to a rocky start – this past June, Colombia's Ministry of ICT (MinTIC) fined Telecall COP7.42 billion (US$1.8 million) for failing to meet obligations attached to its 5G spectrum licence.
