Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr now supports automatic toll payments

Ethio Telecom announced on Thursday it has partnered with Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise (ETRE) to launch an RFID-powered digital toll payment solution for users of the Addis Ababa-Adama expressway.

The TOLO Mini App, which is now integrated with Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr super app, enables drivers to automatically pay tolls digitally without having to stop at the toll gate.

Once drivers equip their vehicles with an RFID tag, they can use the app to register for the service to digitally link the vehicle’s account ID, toll card ID and plate number into a single profile that can then be linked to their Telebirr accounts.

As long as drivers have a big enough balance in their Telebirr wallets, they can drive through the toll gates and have the fee deducted automatically.

Fleet managers can also use the app to manage up to ten vehicles and process top-ups for their own fleet or on behalf of other drivers.

Ethio Telecom said that removing the need for manual cash deposits and paperwork will cut down wait times and traffic congestion at toll gates, mitigate risks associated with handling cash such as theft and fraud, and make the whole process more efficient.

The tie-up with ETRE also includes a new service and penalty management system, which is also integrated with the Telebirr platform.

The new system replaces ETRE’s legacy manual payment workflows with a fully automated platform for processing traffic violations such as overweight vehicles and unauthorized entry into expressway zones, as well as road service fees such as property damage, tipper/tow crane services, and vehicle parking.

Ethio Telecom said both new systems give ETRE real-time visibility and centralized control over all revenue streams, while also boosting operational efficiency and eliminating revenue leakage.

The partnership will also go towards driving up adoption of digital payments by leveraging Telebirr’s massive user base, Ethio Telecom added.
