Veon-owned Ukrainian telco Kyivstar announced on Thursday it has struck a deal to buy local cloud infrastructure provider GigaCloud in a deal valued at around US$50 million.
Founded in 2016, GigaCloud serves over 1,800 enterprise customers and supports digital transformation across a broad range of industries. Kyivstar said the acquisition will enable it to accelerate GigaCloud’s expansion and strengthen Ukraine’s digital infrastructure.
The deal also enables Kyivstar to create a powerful platform for enterprise IT compute, AI, cybersecurity, and data-driven solutions, said Kyivstar Group president Oleksandr Komarov.
“As demand for cloud computing, AI capabilities, and secure data infrastructure continues to grow, we see substantial opportunities to expand our presence in high-value digital services,” Komarov said in a statement.
Komarov added that the GigaCloud purchase also furthers Kyivstar’s strategy to evolve from a telecoms operator into a digital ecosystem and technology platform company.
Previous acquisitions along those lines in the past two years have included mobility operators Uklon and E-wings, regional ISP Shtorm, solar power company Sunvin 11, six solar power plants in the Lviv region, and digital healthcare company Tabkletki.
The GigaCloud acquisition will also accelerate Veon’s own strategy to build cloud services for enterprise customers and reinforces Kyivstar’s long-term commitment to Ukraine’s digital economy, said VEON group CEO Kaan Terzioglu.
