Terranova begins work on data centre campus in Brazil

Latin American data centre firm Terranova, the hyperscale data centre platform backed by the Actis infrastructure fund, described as one of the largest and longest-standing sustainable infrastructure investors globally, has started work on a new data centre campus outside Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The company announced last week that work had started on the first phase of Campus Campinas, as the area is known. It will feature a substation with an initial capacity of 300MW, scheduled to come online in December 2027 and with the potential to expand up to 1GW.

The project reportedly foresees 216 MW of IT in the initial phase, with areas reserved for future expansions that could raise the total to 386 MW of IT.

According to the Data Centre Dynamics website, the investment in the construction of the campus will exceed US$500 million in the initial phase. Additional funding throughout the implementation stages is likely to be scheduled through 2029.

The project will occupy a site of approximately 944,000 square metres, of which about 115,000 square metres will be allocated to the built-up area. Approximately 285,000 square metres will be preserved as green areas or donated to the municipality along with the construction of urban infrastructure, such as public roads and water and sewage treatment plants, ensuring the public interest and a balance between technological development and environmental preservation.

As with many such projects, Terranova is keen to note that this project will involve liquid cooling technology with a closed-loop water system to reduce water use. In fact, as the TI Inside website notes, this could be a first; no data centre with liquid cooling is currently in operation in Brazil, although there are projects under development.

Actis launched Terranova late last year, with plans to invest US$1.5 billion over the next three years developing a portfolio of campuses in Brazil, Mexico, and Chile. Additional markets under evaluation.

Indeed, in February we reported that Terranova had launched its first data centre in Mexico.
