Equinix boosts data centre investment in Colombia

Data centre company Equinix has reportedly expanded its Colombia data centre footprint and increased its investment, bringing online the second phase of BG2, its second data centre in Colombia, doubling the site's cabinet capacity in Bogota.

The BNamericas website says the expansion required US$28 million in investment on top of the US$45 million invested in the facility's first phase, which came online in 2022. Activation of the second phase had been planned for the second quarter of 2026.

With the new phase, the site now has 1,100 cabinets, doubling the original 550 racks. Power capacity has not yet been revealed, though unofficial estimates suggest a capacity somewhere between 6MW and 7MW.

Like the first site, BG2 is located in Bogota's free trade zone, an industrial hub with tax benefits. Equinix's first data centre in Bogota, BG1, was part of a portfolio of 29 global data centres the group acquired from US operator Verizon in 2017 for US$3.6 billion.

The Colombian capital accounts for a significant share of digital traffic in northern South America and the Andean region. It also houses NAP Colombia, the primary neutral internet exchange point (IXP) in the country, and several other IXPs.

The country is also an important hub for submarine cables. Through its Bogota facilities, Equinix customers can access low-latency international routes to the continent's main traffic exchange hubs.

Equinix operates 20 data centres across seven major metropolitan areas in Latin America covering Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Peru.
