Datec launches PNG’s first sovereign cloud and AI data centre

Telikom PNG subsidiary Datec PNG officially launched Kumul Cloud Infinity – billed as Papua New Guinea’s first sovereign cloud and AI data centre – on Friday in partnership with CloudSigma.

Datec PNG gave no details on the load capacity of the new data centre in Port Moresby, but did say the facility sports advanced Nvidia H200 GPU capabilities designed to handle heavy AI workloads and data storage locally. Hewlett Packard Enterprise also supplied equipment for the data centre.

According to EMTV, Kumul Cloud Infinity is powered by a mix of grid electricity, UPS, conventional backup generators, and gas-based power generation in partnership with Geogas PNG. It also features “specialized cooling systems” to support continuous high-performance computing.

“We now have the capability here in PNG to run AI workloads, analyze large amounts of information and support sophisticated AI applications, while at the same time providing cloud computing and data-storage services required by Government, state-owned enterprises and private businesses,” Datec PNG chairman Moses Maladina said at the launch ceremony.

Telikom Group CEO Amos Tepi said in a LinkedIn Post over the weekend that Kumul Cloud Infinity extends Telikom’s mandate into secure local cloud, AI, cybersecurity and data processing, and marks an important step in establishing sovereign cloud and AI operations in Papua New Guinea.

“Since digital technology arrived in PNG, almost 100% of our data has been managed and stored abroad,” he said. “For government agencies, banks, hospitals, universities, businesses and citizens, this raised questions about location, governing laws, access and restoration during disruptions, and national control over strategically valuable data.”

Tepi said that Kumul Cloud Infinity “provides a credible national response. Hosting systems and data within PNG’s jurisdiction advances data residency and gives organisations greater control, confidence and visibility while supporting national resilience and innovation.”

At a pre-launch ceremony for Kumul Cloud Infinity held in March, Maladina said Datec plans to build a second AI data centre in Lae to provide geographic redundancy, though no timeline has been provided for that project.
