Ericsson to build and manage Natrindo 3G network

Indonesian mobile operator Natrindo Telepon Selular has awarded Ericsson a contract to build, operate and manage its new 3G / WCDMA network in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

Indonesian mobile operator Natrindo Telepon Selular (NTS) has awarded Ericsson a contract to build, operate and manage its new 3G / WCDMA network in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

Under the two-year agreement Ericsson will supply both 2G and 3G/WCDMA radio network equipment and undertake the turnkey implementation of NTS's upgraded network. Implementation will begin immediately.

Kusnadi Sukarja, President of NTS: "Ericsson has had a long-standing partnership with Malaysian operator Maxis, having been a key supplier for its 2G and 3G network, as well as a partner in the operations and management of the Maxis 3G network. Taking this into consideration, and with the challenging timelines in the rollout and implementation of this project, we felt that Ericsson was best suited for the job.

Ericsson currently supplies 44 of the 80 WCDMA commercially launched networks worldwide, and has a 35% global market share in GSM / GPRS / EDGE / WCDMA.

NTS is a subsidiary of Maxis Communications. It began operation in 2001 with the provision of GSM-based mobile telephone service to about 20,000 subscribers in the Surabaya and Malang regions of Indonesia . NTS holds one of two 3G licenses in Indonesia , with bandwidth of 10MHz at the 1900MHz spectrum. The company now has the opportunity to expand its services to the 3G spectrum nationwide.
